Strip That FatSomersizing Review - Suzanne Somers has made quite an impression on the diet industry and continues to help people battle their weight with her Somersize program.  The plan boasts seven books written by Somers, creating a blueprint for this food combining diet plan

Somersizing has been transforming along a series of four books that entail the Suzanne Somer diet.   Here she recounts where her journey of dieting begun.   She was then a single mom and was rejected for a role in a TV series because she was "too chunky" she admits that though she was 29 years old she was 20 pounds overweight.   It is in this book that she introduces the concept of food combining that is a central theme on somersizing.  

Basically SomerSize diet involves eliminating sugars from your diet and eating right combination of what she refers to as somersize food groups.  There are four somersize food groups.  The first are proteins and fats.  Proteins include meat, poultry, fish and eggs.  Fats include those in their "natural state" like oil, butter, cream and cheese.  The second group is vegetables which includes a host of low starch fresh vegetables from zucchini to pepper. 

The third is what she calls carbos.  These include whole grain pastas, cereals, bread, beans and non-fat dairy products.  Finally fruits make up the fourth somersize food group. 

There are also rules to this combined eating diet, like fruit only in the morning on an empty stomach, carbs can only be eaten with non-fat foods, and if you switch back to a protein/fat meal, you need to wait 3 to 5 hours. The plan has two phases, weight loss and maintenance.  The diet plan is inexpensive to follow, just pick up one of her many books on “Somersizing”.

What we like about this plan
  Suzanne lets you eat until you are full! No calories to count as long as you are combining your foods accordingly.  Her books have great recipes that are delicious and easy to prepare.  She has a very easy to navigate website for Somersizing with great products, that are a little pricy, but make it easy to have tasty treats while staying on the plan.  Gives good advice about cutting out refined carbs and processed foods.

 

What we dislike about this plan  Getting the hang of this diet can be tricky. You might have to read the book a few times to understand the rules.  Diet seems to be low in dietary fiber and high in acidity.  This is not a diet for vegetarians.  There is no scientific proof to support the theories of Somersizing.  Exercise is not a component of this plan, but Suzanne gives another nod to the thigh master fitness gadget. She does 30 minutes a day, three days a week.  There is no mention of cardiovascular exercise. 


How Healthy is this plan?  It is possible to make it healthy, but not probable. It can only be healthy if you sit down and map out your “meal combining” to included the fruit in the morning, make your fats healthy fats, your protein lean and get in your carbos in a proper ratio.  To be able to handle this task would create a lot of work and discipline on the dieter’s part.  Suzanne’s more recent books, addresses the issues of processed foods, healthy fats, and refined carbohydrates.
 

 

Here’s The Bottom Line  This is the Hay Diet with a modern spin promoted by a celebrity.  A celebrity who has made a substantial empire marketing this diet plan.  While there is no scientific proof to its promise, it has helped many people lose weight. It is similar to every other carbohydrate cutting diet but Suzanne lets you eat certain ones, with rules how and when you may eat them. 

This plan requires rather strict adherence that may not be practical for the average people.  Furthermore, without an exercise scheme, it is hard to make this a lifestyle plan.  Experts have pointed out several cautions about the plan including its lack of focus on exercise; not allowing for enough calcium in the diet; and the likelihood of its followers eating foods high in cholesterol. 

As with other carb-cutting plans, the big question is will you be able to live this way?  If you go back to eating carbs like you used to and go back to portion control, facts remain that most inevitably gain back any weight dropped from this types of plans.
