Rice Diet Review

fat loss for idiotsRice Diet Review -
The Rice Diet is based on the 1939 Rice Diet Program, where dieters checked into facilities in  Durham, N.C., for an intensive two to four week boot camp focused on treating obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other health issues. This clinic is still running today.

Due to the continuous success of that expensive in-house program, co-authors, Kitty Rosati, MS, RD, LDN, a registered dietitian; and her cardiologist husband, Robert Rosati, MD, wrote, The Rice Diet Solution to show those wanting to try the diet at home.

There are four steps in following this plan.
1. The Diet - adhering to the food rules of the Rice Diet  2. Mindful Eater - educate yourself about nutrition and make smart choices 3. Resting - find time each day for you; to meditate or exercise 4.  Support Network - include friends and family to keep you motivated.

The first week is all about detox.  You'll have very little food and what you will have is quite limited.  There is absolutely no salt or sodium.  Each day you'll have starches like brown rice and quinoa.  Six of the seven days you can have vegetables and some no-fat dairy.  Fruit is permissible one time this week.

Then the next phase is the weight loss phase.  Follow the same food plan as in phase one.  However, vegetables and no-fat dairy are permissible only five days per week and on the seventh day you can have a serving of protein (ideally fish).  Next is the maintenance phase.  Weight loss will slow down and allow you to manage a healthy weight.  You'll also increase calories by adding fish or other lean protein two times each week.  You can also incorporate tofu, cheese and nuts to the previous food plans.

The diet almost eliminates salt and sugar, which the originator claims cause you to have an increased appetite.  By eliminating these items you're more likely to lose weight and with the Rice Diet, you'll accomplish that quickly.  You'll consume very little calories, only about 1,000 each day.  Their website has a great support system and an online store for low sodium items.  The diet, if done via website or by the book, is inexpensive.  If you're interested in becoming a patient at the Rice Diet clinic, get ready to pay for it.  The cost goes down each week of your stay,
but starts at $2,300 for the first week, $1,000 for the second, $800 for the third, $700 for the fourth and $539 each week after.  These prices do not include hotel accommodations.  This is not covered by Medicare or most insurance companies.

Whatwe like about this plan.  The plan is supervised at a clinic if necessary. It is over 70 years old.  It has proven to treat many weight related illnesses.  Weight loss is quick, with a maintenance plan.  The book and website has great meal plans and recipes.  The diet recommends physical and mental exercises.  Yoga and tai chi is highly recommended.

What we dislike about this plan
. The caloric intake is very low, about 1,000 calories/day, which is not so easy to do.  There are many rules to this diet.  Strict portion control with no salt, no sodium and barely any fruit.

How healthy is this plan?
The plan is not healthy due to the limited caloric intake, minimal protein, healthy fat, or fruit.  It is too restrictive to be a well rounded healthy plan.

Here is the Bottom line
. The Rice Diet is nearly 70 years old, with books on the New York Times Bestseller list and a highly regarded clinic in North Carolina.  It’s not a fly-by-night plan.  The rice diet clinic website reports, “The Rice Diet is an extremely effective treatment for high blood pressure.  On the Diet, many patients can completely stop their medications with the same or better control of their blood pressures.

In a review of our recent patients, we found that medication could be stopped completely in 61% and decreased in an additional 16%.  Over time, even more patients are able to discontinue medications with further improvement in blood pressures.”  If this is accurate than there might be something to it, but you have to go and stay in the clinic to be medically supervised.  Don’t worry if you can make the trip, there are many, more nutritionally based lifestyle plans that can help lower hypertension and other medical issues associate with being overweight.
