Feingold Diet Review

Strip that fatFeingold Diet Review
 - First published in 1970 by Dr. Benjamin Feingold, a pediatrician and allergist.   As years have gone by, more and more children are being diagnosed with learning disabilities.  To treat and prevent this condition Feingold devised a diet a diet free of salicylales, artificial colors and flavors.  This also includes artificial preservatives BHA, BHT, TBHQ.   The doctor also released “The Feingold Cookbook” and “Why Your Child is Hyperactive”.

In addition, parents are advised to avoid over-the-counter drugs and prescription drugs and to limit the use of mouthwash, toothpaste, cough drops, perfume and other non-food products. Elimination begins as a two-stage plan, and if improvement occurs for 4 – 6 weeks, certain foods can be “carefully reintroduced” one at a time. There is a support system on the Feingold Association of the U.S., which has local chapters. The materials to the Feingold diet are $69.

What
we like about this plan The diet has documented scientific studies and plenty of success stories posted on its website. In addition, it has been stated that this change has improved fidgetiness, sleeping habits, asthma, hives and muscle coordination.

What
we dislike about this plan  It’s time consuming.  It requires families to cook everything from scratch, which makes the plan extremely restrictive. There is no formal exercise program for these children.   A successful response to the diet depends on 100% compliance.   A single drink for or bite of the wrong food can cause an undesirable reaction that can last for up to 72 hours.

How healthy is this plan?
As hard as it may be to make a lifestyle, absolutely! Feingold’s diet was published in 1970 when most of the world though eliminating additives and chemicals and preservatives was rubbish.

Here
’s The   Bottom Line  Before putting a child suspected of any hyperactivity disorder on medication, this diet may be an option or tocompliment his/her medication. Critics claim that if the diet works it is from the diet changing the family dynamics, such as paying attention to your children.  Probably not a cure all, but for some families it has been a blessing.
