Dinitrophenol
(DNP)
Dinitrophenol
Diet Review - The substance 2, 4-Dinrophenol is
an industrial chemical. In the early 1930’s Drs.
Tainter and Cutting, two physicians from Stanford
University began reporting on the ability for of this
chemical to speed metabolism.
Here’s how, DNP can boost metabolic rate via the inhibition of
the OF1 ATP synthase molecule, located in the inner wall of
each mitochondrion. While the electron transport chain
pumps hydrogen ions into the inter-membrane space, the coupling
of the protons gradient to ATP production is rendered
impossible by DNP. As a result, ATP production is
dramatically reduced, the energy is instead thrown off as
heat.
In a dieter’s world this means when we take DNP we get less ATP
and more heat. Therefore, in order to keep up with our ATP
needs, we burn more food up, and then using our fat stores,
hence weight loss. Simply put, this means eating your
normal diet, but you will have burned 20-40% of the calories
from the diet aid. When the doctors made this discovery
public, 100,000 people took this substance for weight loss
means. This panicked the two doctors, fearing that taking too
much would cause overheating, high fevers and death.
What we like about this plan Being able to eat what
you want and have a pill burn it off sounds to good to be
true…and it was. When the U.S. Office of Drug Control,
the predecessor to today’s Food and Drug Administration,
investigators found a link between DNP and deaths and other
illnesses and injuries it raised concerns. In 1938, when
the organization gained the right to remove drugs from the
marketplace, Dinitrophenol was first on the list!
What we dislike about this
plan
There are many things not
to like about this ingesting this chemical into your
system. The difference between a weight loss dose
and a dose resulting in death is a small concentration.
Even a safe “dose’ eventually can disrupt the
amount of ATP your body creates for life. There is
no upper limit to DNP’s body temperature increase,
meaning that one may literally “cook from the inside” if
taken too much.
How healthy is
this plan? Dinitrophenol consumption should never be
taken for weight loss whatsoever. Although no longer
approved, the internet still promotes this dangerous, illegal
drug for weight loss. There are many reported and
documented cases of bodybuilders illegally using DNP resulting
in severe dehydration, carcinogenesis, insomnia, muscle
soreness yellow body fluids, allergic cravings, and allergic
reactions. Luckily, finding this product is a bit
difficult since there are only two manufacturers and they do
not sell to the public.
Here’s The Bottom Line Even after all this information many people
still illegally seek out DNP to cut weight. This pills
dosing is so highly individualized and the consequences are so
deadly, it would be ignorant to use. The black market
price is pricy, as is the risk of consumption. Reports
from DNP death are still being reported, including two outlined
in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology in 2006. Both
victims were using DNP for weight loss purposes.
