Atkins Diet
Review
- The diet was adapted by Dr. Robert
Atkins in the 1960’s. He read a diet in the Journal of
American Medical Association and resolved his own weight
conditions during his medical school
days. He wrote a series books, created a
“low-carb” franchise.
The diets main concept is to
control obesity by eliminating all refined carbohydrates and
secondly that saturated fats overrated as a nutritional problem
and lastly only trans-fats should be
eliminated.
Atkins restriction of
carbohydrates in order to switch the body’s metabolism from
burning glucose to burning stored body
fat. This process
begins when the body? Ketosis is a result of running out of
excess carbohydrates to burn.
There are four
phases. The first
phase is the induction
phase, which is the most restrictive. Carbohydrates are limited to 20 “net” grams
per day (carbohydrates minus fiber, sugar alcohols and
glycerin).
Drinking 8 glasses
of water, no alcohol and limited caffeine consumption is also
part of the induction phase.
The second phase is
the ongoing weight loss phase, the third is the pre-maintenance
phase and the fourth is lifetime maintenance
phase.
The Atkins Company
has manufactured many products to compliment the diet that can
be purchased on their website which also provides additional
support.
What we like about this. That’s
easy! No
counting calories! Bacon and eggs for
breakfast! Cobb salad with
blue cheese for lunch! Steak for dinner!
All the saturated fats do manage to keep you full.
In the induction phase it is not uncommon to loss 5
– 10 pounds.
How healthy
Is this plan? The
first two stages seem very unhealthy. Scientific data on
low-carb diets have yet to identify any long-term health risks
and benefits. Avoiding refined sugar is highly recommended by
many nutritionists, however the dangers of encouraging the
elimination of fruits and vegetable is an overwhelming evidence
that these foods protect us from a bunch of degenerative
diseases, especially cancer.
Here's The
Bottom Line Majority of this
diet’s initial weight loss is water weight. People make a
mistake by “doing Atkins” by eliminating all carbohydrates from
their diet rather than properly following the four phases of
this plan.
The diet is easy to follow and very popular with men. If
portion control is an issue this diet might be worth a try.
Four to six months on Atkins can not cause any long-term
issues. In six months, you will be eating reasonable
non-refined amounts of carbohydrates. To use Atkins as a life
plan is not recommended!
